The followers of George Fox (1624–1691) were present in the Netherlands by the 17th cen tury. At that time, local authorities often persecuted the Quakers for fear of their sectarian and nonconformist attitudes, but in later cen turies, they were usually tolerated. The center of the Dutch Society of Friends was established in Amsterdam in 1931.
